Surface Position Guide

One Cabinet Can Require Several Different Material Structures

The outer shell, door trim and internal metal panels do not have identical requirements. Each position should be quoted and approved separately instead of applying one specification across the whole cabinet.

Position 01

Outer Shell and Side Panels

Visible cabinet surfaces require controlled color, gloss, flatness and forming. Dark and metallic surfaces also need closer review of fingerprints, scuffs and handling marks.

PCM Solid Color VCM Decorative AFP by Test
Position 02

Door Frame, Fascia and Trim

Frequently touched edges may use brushed or dark metallic surfaces, stainless steel, coated steel or aluminum profiles depending on the cabinet design and forming method.

Brushed VCM Stainless Option Aluminum Profile
Position 03

Internal Metal Liner or Rear Panel

When metal is specified inside the cabinet, the buyer should confirm condensation resistance, cleaning, corrosion protection, odor or VOC limits and any market-specific material compliance requirements.

Core Material Decision

PCM or VCM for the Visible Cabinet Surface?

PCM · Painted Surface

Solid Color, Controlled Gloss and Mass Production

PCM uses an organic coating applied and cured before panel forming. It is commonly selected for white, black, gray, silver and other approved solid-color cabinet surfaces.

  • Suitable for solid-color, selected matte, gloss and metallic paint effects
  • Color and gloss can be controlled against an approved physical standard
  • Formability must be matched to the bend, draw and edge-fold design
  • Fingerprint performance depends on the actual topcoat and surface texture
  • Often selected for standard and cost-controlled cabinet programs

Review the commercial material structure on the PCM pre-coated metal page.

VCM · Film-Laminated Surface

Brushed, Metallic, Printed and Textured Appearance

VCM uses a decorative film laminated to a prepared metal substrate. It is considered when the cabinet requires a surface effect that is difficult to produce with a standard paint system.

  • Brushed metal, dark metallic, mirror, wood grain and printed designs may be developed
  • Film type, thickness and embossing should follow the forming requirement
  • Protective-film removal and adhesive residue must be checked during the trial
  • Low-gloss film does not automatically guarantee anti-fingerprint performance
  • Often selected for visible premium or differentiated cabinet surfaces

Review the film structures and finish directions on the VCM laminated steel page.

Specification Framework

Typical Parameters to Confirm for a Wine Cooler Project

The values below are quotation and sample-development directions—not universal acceptance standards. Final thickness, substrate, coating or film, forming performance and compliance documents must follow the cabinet drawing and buyer specification.

Parameter PCM Outer Shell VCM Decorative Shell Internal Metal Panel, When Used
Substrate Direction CR, EGI or smooth GI according to corrosion and forming requirements CR, EGI or suitably finished GI according to appearance and lamination CR, GI, EGI or another approved substrate according to condensation and design
Steel Thickness Commonly within an appliance-sheet range; confirm rigidity and tooling Commonly within an appliance-sheet range; confirm bend and film behavior Defined by liner or rear-panel structure and assembly method
Surface System Paint topcoat, primer, pretreatment and back coat PVC, PET or another approved decorative film and adhesive system Paint or film system selected for cleaning, humidity and odor requirements
Color and Gloss Approved physical sample and agreed tolerance Approved film or formed panel; define pattern and viewing direction Usually functional or light-color appearance unless otherwise specified
Forming T-bend, mandrel bend or formed-part trial as agreed Formed-part trial for bend marks, cracking, delamination and pattern distortion Check seams, folds, clips and assembly contact points
Surface Protection Protective film when required by stamping and assembly Protective film normally reviewed for visible decorative surfaces Defined by handling and cleanliness requirements
Environment Indoor use, condensation zones, cleaning and transport conditions Same, plus fingerprint and scratch visibility Low-temperature operation, condensation, cleaning and odor/VOC limits
Compliance Customer and destination-market requirements Customer and destination-market requirements Direct food-contact rules only where the intended use actually creates food contact

Food-contact wording needs care: storing sealed wine bottles or packaged beverages inside a cabinet does not automatically make every liner a direct food-contact material. The buyer should define the intended contact scenario and required market documentation. Low odor, cleanability and condensation resistance may still be important even where direct food-contact regulation does not apply.

Technical Points Buyers Often Miss
01
AFP is a performance requirement, not just a finish name. Define the cleaning method and accepted fingerprint visibility on the approved sample.
02
Embossing must be approved with the print. Pattern alignment, repeat length and forming distortion should be checked on a physical panel.
03
Low odor should be tested, not assumed from a label. Agree on the customer test method, conditioning time and acceptance criteria.
04
Color tolerance must be agreed. Metallic and special-effect surfaces need defined lighting and viewing conditions, not only a single ΔE number.
05
EGI is not automatically required for premium VCM. EGI can offer a smooth surface, but skin-passed GI, CR or another prepared substrate may also work after sample validation.
06
T-bend is not the complete forming test. Door edges, deep folds and stamped corners should be checked through the buyer's actual tooling or a representative formed sample.
Sample Approval

Approve the Complete Material Structure Before Bulk Production

A flat color card can define the visual direction, but it cannot fully predict forming, protective-film behavior, condensation exposure or appearance after assembly.

1

Define the Position

Outer shell, trim, internal metal panel or rear component.

2

Approve the Surface

Color, gloss, film, texture, brush direction and visible defect limits.

3

Run a Formed Trial

Check bends, folds, film adhesion, paint cracking and surface marks.

4

Check Cabinet Conditions

Condensation, cleaning, odor, temperature and assembly handling.

5

Retain the Standard

Keep the signed sample and agreed inspection limits for repeat orders.

Coating adhesion, scratch resistance, liquid resistance and bend performance should be tested using methods agreed in the purchase specification. The method and acceptance level must both be stated.

Procurement Reference

Information Needed for a Useful Quotation

Separate the requirements for each cabinet position. This prevents a decorative outer-shell specification from being copied incorrectly to internal or hidden parts.

Multiple specifications can be coordinated in one project.

A project may include PCM for the cabinet shell, decorative VCM for trim and a different coated metal for an internal panel. Each coil or material lot should still retain its own traceable specification, certificate and inspection record.

FAQ

Common Questions

What is the main difference between PCM and VCM for wine cooler shells?
PCM uses a painted coating and is commonly selected for solid colors and controlled gloss. VCM uses a laminated decorative film and can provide brushed, metallic, mirror, printed and textured effects. The better option depends on the desired appearance, forming, cleaning, fingerprint requirement, quantity and approved sample.
Does a wine cooler inner liner automatically require food-contact certification?
No. The requirement depends on the intended contact scenario and the destination market. A cabinet that stores sealed bottles does not automatically make every internal surface a direct food-contact material. The buyer should define any applicable regulation together with odor, cleanability, condensation and migration requirements.
Is a low-gloss finish automatically anti-fingerprint?
No. Low gloss may reduce the visibility of some marks, but anti-fingerprint performance depends on the actual topcoat or film surface, color, texture and cleaning method. It should be approved through a physical sample and an agreed test.
Is EGI always better than GI for decorative VCM?
No. EGI can provide a smooth metallic coating, but a suitably prepared CR or skin-passed GI substrate may also work. The correct substrate should be selected by film thickness, appearance, corrosion requirement, forming and lamination trials.
What should be tested before ordering decorative cabinet steel in bulk?
Confirm color, gloss, pattern direction, substrate, film or coating structure, bend and stamping performance, protective-film removal, scratch visibility, condensation or cleaning exposure, packaging and the signed approval sample.
