PCM & VCM Steel for Dishwasher Exterior Panels
Material options for exterior door skins, visible side panels and decorative metal trim— selected according to appearance, forming, cleaning, humidity exposure, protective-film behavior and the approved appliance specification.
Where PCM and VCM Fit in a Dishwasher
PCM and VCM are most relevant to exterior decorative metal parts. The internal tub, racks, spray system and components exposed directly to hot wash water require separate material specifications.
This page does not position PCM or VCM as dishwasher tub materials. Stainless steel, polymer and hybrid tub structures are separate engineering choices. Always confirm whether a requested panel is outside the cabinet, behind the door, or inside the direct wash environment.
Exterior Door Skin
The main visible metal surface. Important controls include color, gloss, texture, fingerprint visibility, edge folds, handle assembly and resistance to household cleaning.
Visible Side and Top Panels
Used on freestanding or partially exposed models. Flatness, batch color consistency, scratch visibility and compatibility with cabinet assembly become more important.
Control Fascia, Kick Plate and Trim
Smaller decorative parts may use painted, laminated, stainless or aluminum material. Tight radii, cutouts, buttons and frequent hand contact should be checked separately.

Core Surface Decision
PCM or VCM for the Dishwasher Exterior?
Solid Color, Controlled Gloss and Repeat Production
PCM uses an organic coating applied and cured before panel fabrication. It can be selected for white, black, gray, silver and other approved painted surfaces.
- Solid colors and selected matte, gloss or metallic paint effects
- Color and gloss approved against a physical sample
- Coating flexibility selected for the required bends and edge folds
- Cleaning and detergent resistance defined by the buyer's test
- Often practical for standard or high-volume model programs
Review the coating structure on the PCM pre-coated metal page.
Brushed, Dark Metallic, Mirror and Printed Effects
VCM uses a decorative film laminated to a prepared metal substrate. It is considered where the exterior requires a surface effect that is difficult to reproduce with a standard paint system.
- Brushed silver, dark metallic, mirror and selected printed designs
- Film, adhesive and substrate selected as one complete structure
- Formed trial checks cracking, whitening, delamination and pattern distortion
- Low-gloss film does not automatically prove anti-fingerprint performance
- Often used for visually differentiated or premium exterior parts

What to Confirm Before Quoting Dishwasher Panel Steel
The table below is a purchasing framework, not a universal fixed specification. Final substrate, thickness, coating or film, forming performance and test requirements must follow the panel drawing and customer standard.
| Parameter | Exterior Door Skin | Visible Side / Top Panel | Fascia, Kick Plate or Trim |
|---|---|---|---|
| Material Direction | PCM, VCM, stainless steel or another approved decorative metal | PCM or selected VCM according to exposure and appearance | PCM, VCM, stainless steel or aluminum according to geometry |
| Substrate | CR, EGI or smooth GI according to corrosion, appearance and forming | CR, GI or EGI according to cabinet design and humidity risk | Selected by thickness, cutouts, bend radius and assembly |
| Surface Approval | Physical sample, color, gloss, texture, brush direction and visible defect limits | Same batch and repeat-order color control where panels are adjacent | Match the door skin, handle and neighboring components |
| Forming | Edge folds, handle opening, embossing, hemming and protective-film behavior | Large-panel flatness, bends, tabs and assembly contact | Tight radii, cutouts, clips and local stamping |
| Cleaning Exposure | Household cleaners, wiping, fingerprints, oils and incidental splashes | Cleaning and kitchen humidity according to installation | Frequent hand contact and cleaning around controls |
| Corrosion Risk | Cut edges, folds, seams, condensation and lower-door splash area | Cabinet joints, floor-level humidity and side exposure | Cut edges, fasteners and contact with dissimilar metals |
| Documentation | Approved sample, material structure, inspection criteria and lot traceability | Same plus flatness and batch-color requirement | Same plus drawing and assembly confirmation |
Do not write “scratch resistant,” “anti-fingerprint” or “detergent resistant” without an agreed test. These are performance requirements affected by the exact coating or film, color, gloss, texture, cleaner, contact pressure and acceptance method.
Finish selection can be cross-checked with the appliance panel surface finishes guide , while the relationship between substrate and corrosion protection is covered in the appliance steel panel substrate guide .
Common Problems Caused by an Incomplete Specification
Many failures are not caused by choosing PCM instead of VCM. They are caused by approving only the flat surface and ignoring the formed part, cleaner, edges and assembly process.
Appearance and Surface Risks
- Color or gloss mismatch between the door skin and visible side panels
- Brush direction or printed pattern installed in the wrong orientation
- Fingerprints or cleaning streaks more visible than expected
- Protective-film residue after storage or panel forming
- Large flat panels showing waviness or surface impressions
Forming and Durability Risks
- Paint cracking or film whitening at folded door edges
- Film delamination around cutouts, corners or handle openings
- Corrosion beginning at cut edges, seams or damaged areas
- Cleaner or detergent causing staining, softening or gloss change
- Scratches introduced during stamping, assembly or transport
Approve the Complete Door-Panel Structure
A digital color code or small flat chip is not enough for a visible dishwasher front. The finished panel should be checked after forming and cleaning.
Define the Panel
Door skin, side panel, fascia, kick plate or decorative trim.
Approve the Surface
Color, gloss, texture, brush direction, visible side and defect limits.
Run the Formed Trial
Check bends, folds, cutouts, coating cracks, film whitening and delamination.
Test Use Conditions
Confirm cleaning, humidity, splash, fingerprint and protective-film behavior.
Retain the Standard
Keep the signed sample, drawing, test criteria and material-lot records.
A T-bend or cross-cut result is useful only when the method and acceptance level are defined. Critical parts should still be validated through representative forming and assembly.
Information Needed for a Useful Quotation
Separate each visible panel position in the inquiry. One model may require different materials for the door skin, side panel and control trim.
Appearance and Forming Data
Flatness and Batch Data
Order and Traceability Data
The inquiry should also define the substrate, thickness, visible side, bend geometry, cleaner exposure, protective film, supply form and approval method.
