Choosing the Right China PPGL Coil Supplier: A Buyer’s Guide

Buying PPGI coils from China can save you 30-40% compared to local suppliers. But the savings mean nothing if you get scammed or receive junk. Here's what actually goes wrong — and how to protect yourself.

Real talk: We get calls every month from buyers who got burned by another supplier. Wrong thickness, fake zinc coating, rust on arrival. This guide is based on what we've seen go wrong — not theory.

PPGI steel coils in warehouse ready for export

China produces over 60% of the world's steel. That means competitive prices and lots of options. But it also means a lot of bad actors who know exactly how to take advantage of first-time importers.

These are the 8 most common mistakes — and they're all avoidable.

The 8 Costly Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)

1

Thickness Shortage — The Silent Ripoff

What happens:

You order 0.5mm PPGI. The invoice says 0.5mm. But when you measure it, it's 0.45mm or even 0.42mm.

Why it happens:

  • Some suppliers quote "base metal thickness" (excluding coating) — you assume it's total thickness
  • Some just cheat, knowing you won't measure every coil
  • 0.05mm difference = 10% less steel = 10% more profit for them

✓ How to avoid:

Write "total thickness including zinc coating and paint" in your contract. Require a thickness test certificate for each batch. See our PPGI thickness guide for standard ranges. Better yet, have a third-party inspector measure before shipping.

2

Zinc Coating Fraud — Looks the Same, Fails Faster

What happens:

You order Z100 (100g/m² zinc). You receive Z60. The coil looks identical. But it will rust in 3 years instead of 10.

Why it happens:

  • Zinc is expensive — lower coating = lower cost = higher margin
  • You can't see the difference with your eyes
  • By the time it rusts, the supplier is long gone
✓ How to avoid:

Require a zinc coating test report (XRF or chemical method) from an accredited lab. SGS, BV, or Intertek are reliable. Don't accept "factory certificate only." Learn the difference between PPGI and PPGL coating to know what you're ordering.

⚠️ Mistake #3: Too-Good-To-Be-True Pricing

This is the one that burns people the hardest.

You send an inquiry. A supplier quotes $580/ton when everyone else is quoting $720-750. You think you found a hidden gem.

Reality: You didn't find a great deal. A scammer found an easy target.

PPGI price comparison chart showing scam vs real pricing

The math doesn't lie:

  • Raw material (HRC) alone costs ~$500-550/ton
  • Add galvanizing + painting + labor + margin = minimum $680-720/ton for real PPGI
  • Anyone quoting below raw material cost is either lying about specs or planning to disappear with your deposit

Red flags:

  • Price significantly below market (check current HRC prices on SteelHome or Mysteel)
  • Pushing for 100% payment upfront
  • New company with no trade history
  • Can't provide factory visit or video call from production line
✓ How to avoid:

Know the current raw material price. If a quote is more than 10% below the average, ask why. If they can't explain it with specifics (old inventory, overstock of that color, etc.), walk away. Check our PPGI price guide for current market rates.

4

Color Mismatch Between Batches

What happens:

Your first container looks perfect. Second container is the same RAL code but noticeably different shade. Your customer rejects it.

Why it happens:

  • Different paint batches, different pigment lots
  • No ΔE (color difference) standard in contract
  • Factory doesn't keep color samples from previous orders
✓ How to avoid:

Specify ΔE ≤ 1.0 (or ≤ 1.5 maximum) in your contract. Keep a physical color sample from every batch. Require the factory to match against your retained sample, not just a RAL chart. See our PPGI color options for available colors.

5

Rust on Arrival — Packaging Failure

What happens:

You open the container. Edges are rusted. Outer wraps are damp. The coil looks like it sat in the rain.

Why it happens:

  • Cheap packaging: no VCI paper, no waterproof wrap
  • Long sea voyage (30-45 days) + temperature changes = condensation inside container
  • Coil stored in open yard before shipping
✓ How to avoid:

Require: eye-to-sky packing + wooden pallet + VCI anti-rust paper + stretch film + steel strapping. Ask for packing photos before container loading. Add "packaging must prevent moisture damage during 45-day sea voyage" to contract.

6

Delivery Delays — Your Project Waits

What happens:

Contract says 25 days lead time. Reality: 45 days. Your project timeline is ruined. Your customer is furious.

Why it happens:

  • Supplier overcommits, under-delivers
  • Peak season (March-May, Sept-Nov) — everyone's fighting for production slots
  • Steel price rising — supplier delays to buy raw material cheaper later
✓ How to avoid:

Split payment: 30% deposit, 70% before shipping (after inspection). Add penalty clause for late delivery (e.g., 0.5% discount per week of delay). Check supplier's actual production capacity vs. their order book.

7

Communication Blackout After Payment

What happens:

Before you pay: instant replies, "dear friend," always available. After you pay: 3 days to respond, vague updates, "still in production."

Why it happens:

  • Sales got their commission, moved to next customer
  • No dedicated order-tracking system
  • It's a trading company with no actual factory control
✓ How to avoid:

Before ordering, ask: Who is my dedicated contact after payment? Get name + direct phone + WeChat/WhatsApp. Request weekly production updates with photos. If they can't commit to this, find someone who will.

8

Fake or Useless Inspection

What happens:

Supplier sends you a "factory inspection report" with nice photos and stamps. Looks official. But it's from 2 years ago — or completely fabricated.

Why it happens:

  • Some trading companies have no factory — they buy from whoever is cheapest
  • Photoshop is easy
  • You're thousands of miles away, what are you going to do?
✓ How to avoid:

Use third-party inspection (SGS, BV, TUV) that YOU arrange and pay for — not one the supplier "recommends." Require video call from the production line with your coils visible. See our factory and production capacity — we welcome verification. Better yet: visit once before placing a large first order.

Pre-Order Checklist

Before you send a deposit, make sure you've confirmed:

Thickness definition: Total thickness including coating clearly stated in contract

Zinc/AZ coating: Specific g/m² with third-party test report required

Price sanity check: Quote is within 10% of market average (not suspiciously low)

Color standard: ΔE tolerance specified, color sample retained

Paint system: PE/SMP/HDP/PVDF clearly specified with thickness

Packaging: Detailed requirements (VCI paper, wooden pallet, waterproof wrap)

Lead time: Written delivery date with delay penalty clause

Payment terms: Split payment, not 100% upfront

Inspection: Third-party inspection arranged by you before shipping

Contact person: Dedicated post-sale contact with direct phone number

What Your Contract Must Include

A handshake deal is not enough. Get these in writing:

Item What to Write
Thickness "Total thickness 0.50mm ± 0.02mm, including zinc layer and paint"
Coating "Zinc coating Z100 (100g/m² minimum), verified by XRF test"
Color "RAL 5015, ΔE ≤ 1.0 compared to retained sample dated [date]"
Paint "Top: 20μm polyester, Back: 7μm epoxy"
Packaging "Eye-to-sky, wooden pallet, VCI paper, waterproof film, steel straps"
Delivery "Ready for shipment within 25 days of deposit. 0.5%/week discount for delay."
Inspection "Buyer-arranged third-party inspection before shipping. Goods released after inspection pass."
Payment "30% T/T deposit, 70% T/T after inspection, before B/L"
