GI, PPGI and Electro-Galvanized Steel Are Different Products
They may all contain zinc, but the coating route, surface structure and intended purchasing specification are not the same.
Hot-Dip Galvanized Steel Coil
Steel sheet continuously coated with zinc by a hot-dip process. This page covers the bare metallic-coated coil before an additional decorative paint system.
PPGI
Galvanized steel that has received pretreatment, primer, topcoat and back coat. Paint performance depends on the complete prepainted system.
Electro-Galvanized Steel
Zinc is deposited through an electrolytic process. Surface, coating distribution and typical use differ from continuous hot-dip galvanized coil.
Confirm the coating route in the inquiry rather than using “galvanized” as a generic term.
GI Coil Prepared for the Customer’s Production Line
Dimensions and tolerances must be reviewed with the steel grade, coating, surface and source mill. One universal range should not be assumed for every specification.
Master Coil
Full-width galvanized coil for customers with their own slitting, profiling, stamping or prepainting equipment.
Slit Coil
Narrow strips prepared according to required width, tolerance, burr, coil ID, coil weight and winding direction.
Cut-to-Length Sheet
Flat sheet for fabrication, panel production or downstream processing, with length, diagonal, flatness and packaging requirements defined by order.
What to Confirm Before Ordering Galvanized Steel Coil
This table replaces the previous mixed list of unrelated grades and treatments. Final values and availability should follow the agreed standard, source mill and customer drawing.

Do not promise one fixed thickness tolerance, zinc range or coil weight for every GI order. These values depend on the selected standard, grade, coating designation, dimensions, source mill and the customer’s production requirements.
Keep Grade Systems Separate
Similar applications may be specified under different national or customer standards. Grade names from different systems should not be presented as direct equivalents without review.
ASTM Route
Common order directions include commercial, forming, drawing and structural grade families under the applicable galvanized-sheet standard.

EN Route
Common designations include forming grades such as DX-series with a zinc-coating suffix, as well as structural grades where required.
- Do not mix bare cold-rolled DC grades into the GI list without the coating designation

- Review forming severity and final use
JIS Route
Commercial, drawing and structural galvanized grades are selected according to the customer's drawing, mechanical requirements and coating specification.
- State the required JIS grade clearly
- Confirm zinc coating and surface treatment separately
- Avoid assuming equivalence from the grade name alone
Understand Coating Designation Before Comparing Quotes
Zinc coating may be expressed by coating mass or by a standard designation. Buyers should confirm the measurement basis and whether the stated value represents both sides combined.
Coating Comparison Checklist
A coating designation should not be compared only by the number printed in the quote. Check the applicable standard and unit first.
- Which standard defines the coating designation?
- Is the stated value total both sides or a per-side requirement?
- Is the product pure zinc-coated GI or zinc-iron alloy-coated material?
- Which test method and sampling frequency apply?
- Are cut edges, formed areas or outdoor exposure critical to the application?

Spangle and Surface Condition
Names for spangle and surface appearance can vary by mill and market. Use physical samples or an agreed surface designation rather than relying only on informal names.
Minimized Spangle
A smaller visible crystalline pattern, subject to the selected mill and surface route.
Regular / Visible Spangle
A more pronounced crystalline appearance where the final product permits it.
Zero-Spangle Appearance
A smoother visual direction often discussed for downstream coating or visible surfaces.
Order-Specific Surface
Textured, skin-passed or mill-specific appearance should be confirmed by sample.
Spangle is not a standalone corrosion grade. Corrosion protection is determined by the complete coating and application system, while spangle mainly describes surface appearance and processing outcome.
