They may all contain zinc, but the coating route, surface structure and intended purchasing specification are not the same.

Do not promise one fixed thickness tolerance, zinc range or coil weight for every GI order. These values depend on the selected standard, grade, coating designation, dimensions, source mill and the customer’s production requirements.

Grade Selection

Keep Grade Systems Separate

Similar applications may be specified under different national or customer standards. Grade names from different systems should not be presented as direct equivalents without review.

ASTM Route

Common order directions include commercial, forming, drawing and structural grade families under the applicable galvanized-sheet standard.

  • State the grade family and mechanical-property requirement
  • State the coating designation separately
  • Confirm whether the application needs forming or structural performance

EN Route

Common designations include forming grades such as DX-series with a zinc-coating suffix, as well as structural grades where required.

  • Do not mix bare cold-rolled DC grades into the GI list without the coating designation
  • Confirm surface quality and coating mass
  • Review forming severity and final use

JIS Route

Commercial, drawing and structural galvanized grades are selected according to the customer's drawing, mechanical requirements and coating specification.

  • State the required JIS grade clearly
  • Confirm zinc coating and surface treatment separately
  • Avoid assuming equivalence from the grade name alone
Zinc Coating

Understand Coating Designation Before Comparing Quotes

Zinc coating may be expressed by coating mass or by a standard designation. Buyers should confirm the measurement basis and whether the stated value represents both sides combined.

Coating Comparison Checklist

A coating designation should not be compared only by the number printed in the quote. Check the applicable standard and unit first.

  • Which standard defines the coating designation?
  • Is the stated value total both sides or a per-side requirement?
  • Is the product pure zinc-coated GI or zinc-iron alloy-coated material?
  • Which test method and sampling frequency apply?
  • Are cut edges, formed areas or outdoor exposure critical to the application?

Surface Appearance

Spangle and Surface Condition

Names for spangle and surface appearance can vary by mill and market. Use physical samples or an agreed surface designation rather than relying only on informal names.

Spangle is not a standalone corrosion grade. Corrosion protection is determined by the complete coating and application system, while spangle mainly describes surface appearance and processing outcome.

Common Questions About Galvanized Steel Coil

What is the difference between galvanized steel coil and PPGI?
Galvanized steel coil is zinc-coated steel without the final decorative paint system. PPGI uses galvanized steel as a substrate and adds pretreatment, primer, topcoat and back coat.
Is the zinc coating value measured on one side or both sides?
Many common sheet-coating designations represent the total coating on both sides, but the convention depends on the selected standard. The order should state the standard, designation, unit and test method.
Does a larger spangle mean better corrosion resistance?
No. Spangle mainly describes the visible zinc-crystal appearance. Corrosion protection depends on the coating mass, surface treatment, environment, cut edges, design and maintenance.
Which galvanized grade is best for deep forming?
The grade must be selected under the chosen standard according to the drawing, forming severity, bend radii, surface requirement and mechanical properties. A representative trial is recommended for critical parts.
Can galvanized steel coil be used as the substrate for color coating?
Yes, when the metallic-coated substrate, surface condition, cleaning, pretreatment, primer, paint and curing process are specified as one complete PPGI system.
Can galvanized steel develop white rust during storage?
Yes. Moisture trapped between closely packed surfaces can cause storage staining or white rust. Dry handling, suitable packaging, drainage, ventilation and proper storage are important.
Do all orders include the same inspection documents?
No. MTC, coating tests, mechanical tests, dimensional reports, packing photos and third-party inspection should be confirmed in the order before production.
