Material Structure

What “55% Aluminum-Zinc Alloy-Coated Steel” Means

The recognized product family uses a hot-dip aluminum-zinc alloy coating on both sides of the steel substrate. The exact alloy type, grade and coating mass should follow the selected standard.

Aluminum-Zinc Alloy Coating — Top Side Coating designation and surface treatment confirmed by order
Steel Substrate Commercial, forming, high-temperature or structural grade as applicable
Aluminum-Zinc Alloy Coating — Bottom Side Total coating designation may represent both sides combined

Do Not Specify the Alloy Name Alone

The phrase “Galvalume” does not fully define the order. Buyers still need to confirm the applicable standard, alloy type, steel grade, coating designation and surface treatment.

  • The standard determines available designations, grades and test requirements.
  • The steel grade controls forming and mechanical performance.
  • The coating designation controls the ordered alloy-coating mass.
  • AFP, passivation, oiling and surface appearance are separate order items.
  • Outdoor performance also depends on cut edges, design, installation and maintenance.

What to Confirm Before Ordering Galvalume Steel Coil

This table replaces the previous fixed range and universal-performance claims. Final values should follow the selected standard, source mill and customer drawing.

Item What to Specify Why It Matters How to Confirm
Product Route Bare hot-dip aluminum-zinc alloy-coated steel; identify the alloy type where the standard provides options Different alloy types and coating routes should not be assumed identical Purchase specification and mill document
Standard ASTM, EN, JIS or another customer-approved standard and edition Grade names, coating designations and test rules differ by standard Contract and technical specification
Steel Grade Commercial, forming, drawing, high-temperature or structural grade as applicable Controls strength, elongation, forming and final component performance MTC and formed trial where required
Thickness & Width Nominal dimensions plus the required tolerance basis Capability changes with grade, coating, width and source mill Order, incoming inspection and processing record
AZ Coating Required coating designation or coating mass under the selected standard Numbers should not be compared without checking the standard, unit and both-side convention Coating-mass test and mill certificate
Surface Appearance Regular, minimized or order-specific appearance; skin-pass when required Visible surface and downstream painting requirements may differ Approved sample and surface inspection
Surface Treatment Passivated or non-passivated, oiled or dry, AFP when applicable Affects temporary storage protection, handling and downstream processing Order code and supplier technical data
Forming & Fabrication Roll forming, bending, stamping, profiling, welding, cutting or prepainting Cut edges and formed areas may behave differently from the flat coated surface Drawing and representative trial
Coil Data Coil ID, maximum OD, coil weight, winding direction and edge condition Must fit the decoiler, slitting line and handling equipment Order confirmation and packing list
Packaging & Storage Eye orientation, wrapping, edge protection, skid and moisture precautions Metallic-coated coil can still suffer storage staining, abrasion and edge damage Approved packaging and loading records

Do not convert one AZ designation into a guaranteed number of service years. Field performance also depends on the alloy type, coating mass, atmosphere, cut edges, fasteners, profile design, drainage, installation, storage and maintenance.

Standards & Grades

Keep Standard Systems Separate

ASTM, EN and JIS designations are not direct equivalents merely because they serve a similar application.

ASTM Route

ASTM A792/A792M covers 55% aluminum-zinc alloy-coated steel sheet in coils and cut lengths, with designations and grades for different application requirements.

  • State the required grade or designation
  • State the coating designation separately
  • Confirm the alloy type required by the current order

EN Route

EN metallic-coated steel orders commonly combine a steel-grade designation with an AZ coating suffix and separate surface-quality requirements.

  • Confirm forming or structural grade
  • Confirm coating mass and surface quality
  • Review mechanical requirements and intended processing

JIS Route

JIS aluminum-zinc alloy-coated steel orders should identify the correct commercial, forming or structural direction together with coating and surface requirements.

  • State the JIS designation clearly
  • Confirm AZ coating and surface treatment
  • Avoid substituting grade names without technical review
Surface Treatment

AFP Is an Order-Specific Surface Option

Anti-fingerprint treatment is not one universal formula. Type, coating amount, appearance, lubricity and test method vary by supplier and project.

Handling & Appearance

AFP may help reduce visible handling marks, but results depend on tint, gloss, surface roughness and the agreed evaluation method.

  • Confirm clear or tinted appearance
  • Approve a physical surface sample
  • Review cleaning and handling expectations

Processing Compatibility

AFP can influence forming friction, adhesion, welding, bonding or downstream painting.

  • State the customer’s forming process
  • Confirm whether downstream painting is planned
  • Test bonding or welding where critical

Storage Protection

Surface treatment may support temporary storage protection, but it does not replace dry transport, ventilation and correct warehouse storage.

  • Avoid trapped moisture between laps
  • Inspect packaging after transport
  • Do not store wet coils or sheets in sealed stacks
Material Selection

Do Not Treat Galvalume as Universally Better Than GI

GI and GL have different metallic-coating behavior. The correct choice depends on the component, forming, cut edges, atmosphere, contact materials and downstream coating system.

Questions That May Favor GL Review

  • Does the application require bare aluminum-zinc coated sheet or coil?
  • Is corrosion or heat resistance a major design requirement?
  • Will the product be used as the substrate for PPGL?
  • Are wide roofing, cladding or fabricated panels being produced?
  • Has the customer already specified an AZ coating designation?

Questions That Require More Review

  • Are cut edges or heavily formed areas critical?
  • Will the sheet contact dissimilar metals or aggressive materials?
  • Is welding, brazing, adhesive bonding or downstream painting required?
  • Does the customer standard specifically require GI rather than GL?
  • Has the complete panel or roof system been approved?

FAQ

Common Questions About Galvalume Steel Coil

What is the difference between Galvalume and PPGL?
Galvalume is the bare aluminum-zinc alloy-coated steel substrate. PPGL adds pretreatment, primer, topcoat and back coat through a separate coil-coating process.
Does AZ150 guarantee a fixed number of service years?
No. AZ150 is a coating designation under the applicable standard. Field life also depends on alloy type, atmosphere, cut edges, profile design, installation, contact materials, maintenance and whether an additional paint system is used.
Is Galvalume always better than galvanized steel?
No. GL and GI have different metallic-coating behavior. The correct choice depends on the environment, cut-edge condition, forming, contact materials, welding or bonding, customer standard and downstream coating process.
Can Galvalume be used as the substrate for PPGL?
Yes, when the GL substrate, surface condition, cleaning, pretreatment, primer, paint and curing process are specified as one complete PPGL system.
Is AFP included on every Galvalume order?
No. AFP is an order-specific treatment. Its type, tint, coating amount, lubricity, processing compatibility and test method should be confirmed before production.
Can bare GL coil be bent or roll formed?
It can be suitable when the steel grade, coating, bend geometry, forming direction, temperature and tooling match the application. Critical profiles should be approved with a representative trial.
Can Galvalume develop storage staining?
Yes. Moisture trapped between closely packed surfaces can cause staining. Dry handling, suitable packaging, ventilation, drainage and correct warehouse storage remain necessary.
