Three Material Roles Inside an Air Conditioner Project

Not every indoor front panel is metal, and not every outdoor housing uses the same coating system. Start with the actual component drawing and service environment.

Indoor Decorative Metal Cover or Trim

Where steel is used on visible indoor components, the priorities are color, gloss, surface texture, cleanability, forming and relation to neighboring plastic or metal parts.

Outdoor Unit Housing and Chassis

Exterior cabinets require a complete corrosion and weathering system that includes the steel grade, metallic coating, pretreatment, primer, topcoat, cut edges, fasteners and drainage design.

VCM can be considered for decorative indoor steel panels or trims where a laminated visual effect is required and the film can withstand forming and assembly.

  • Bend marks, cracking, delamination and protective film checked in trial forming
  • Not normally the first choice for a weather-exposed outdoor housing

Corrosion and Weathering for Outdoor Housings

Outdoor cabinet material should be selected as a full system rather than from one zinc, salt-spray or topcoat number.

  • GI, Al-Zn or another approved metallic-coated substrate
  • PE, SMP, HDP, PVDF or another coating system by exposure and warranty target
  • Cut edges, fasteners, drainage, dissimilar-metal contact and installation included

What to Confirm for Each Air Conditioner Component

The table below is a purchasing framework, not a universal specification. Thickness, substrate, metallic coating, paint or film structure and acceptance criteria must follow the drawing, production process and target market.

Salt-spray hours are not service-life years. A neutral salt-spray test can reveal coating discontinuities and verify a defined quality level, but it should not be used alone to rank different material systems or predict how long an outdoor unit will last in a real coastal environment.

AFP is not guaranteed by “matte” or “low gloss.” Agree on the touch, cleaning and visual acceptance method using the actual color and surface.

T-bend is only one forming indicator. Bend direction, temperature, substrate and coating system affect the result; actual tooling should be validated for critical parts.

White does not automatically require an AFP coating. Fingerprint visibility depends on gloss, texture, lighting, handling and the customer's appearance standard.

There is no universal coastal minimum. Distance from the sea alone is not enough; salt deposition, humidity, shelter, drainage, temperature and maintenance all affect the exposure.

PVDF is a durable option, not an automatic requirement. The complete substrate and coating system should match the actual exposure and OEM target.

Do not set one universal ΔE limit. Buyer and supplier should agree on the color formula, illuminant, geometry, gloss, texture and acceptable tolerance.

The safest route is to connect the written specification to the actual stamped or assembled component before bulk production.

Indoor PCM or VCM and outdoor PPGI or PPGL may be coordinated in one shipment, but each material lot should retain its own technical specification, coil identity, certificate and inspection record.

FAQ

Common Questions About Air Conditioner Panel Steel

Can the same steel specification be used for indoor and outdoor AC units?
Usually not. Indoor decorative metal parts focus on appearance, cleanability and forming, while outdoor housings require a corrosion and weathering system. Hidden parts may use a third functional specification.
Is PPGL AZ150 with PVDF mandatory for every coastal outdoor unit?
No. It can be one option for demanding exposure, but the correct system depends on actual salt deposition, humidity, shelter, drainage, part design, metallic coating, paint system, warranty target and customer validation.
How many salt-spray hours should an outdoor housing pass?
There is no single universal number. The product specification must define the test method, specimen preparation, scribe or cut-edge condition, exposure period and acceptance criteria. Salt-spray hours alone should not be translated into real service years.
Does a white indoor metal panel always need anti-fingerprint coating?
No. Fingerprint visibility depends on gloss, texture, lighting, cleaning and the customer's appearance standard. Define the requirement through an approved sample and agreed evaluation method.
Can a T-bend result prove that the panel will pass the actual stamping process?
Not by itself. T-bend is useful for comparing coating flexibility under an agreed method, but bend direction, test temperature, substrate, part geometry and tooling can change the final result. Critical parts should be validated through representative forming.
What is required for an exact color match?
Provide a stable physical reference, then agree on the color-difference formula, illuminant, measurement geometry, gloss, texture and acceptable tolerance. Final approval should use a production sample rather than a digital screen color.
